When Jon Bon Jovi was on Howard Stern, Stern asked him who he considered to be the greatest guitarist ever
Bon Jovi’s response was immediate, he said “Jeff Beck”
That really surprised Stern, and to be honest, it surprised me too
Beck is a great guitarist and all, and has probably played on more stages with more super star singers than any other guitarist alive, but the best guitarist ever?
Stern then asked Bon Jovi why?
Bon Jovi said this::
“Jeff Beck is the only guitarist I’ve ever seen that can take any guitar fresh out of the box, do nothing to it, then make it sound the way he does”
That made me say whoooooaaaaaaa
If you’re not familiar with guitars it’s not uncommon to “build” them out of parts from other guitars. It’s done to create the sound the player wants
Stevie Ray Vaughns 2 main guitars were both made out of parts from 5 different guitars
Jeff Becks sound was / is so unique because he didn’t use picks, he used his fingers and through the control / volume knobs made his guitar sound like human vocals
The thing about Jeff Beck is he chased “the perfect sound” until one day he realized what people had been telling him was true, the perfect sound was him the whole time
Very few things in life are ever “perfect”
God didn’t design or make us to be perfect
He created us to be us, human, and “perfectly imperfect”
