It’s hot out, these are things every homeowner and auto owner should know
Lets start with the place we spend the most time::::
Our homes…..
The furnace filter
If it gets clogged the A/C won’t work as well
Everyone thinks change it every 3 months, wronggggggggggg
When it’s this hot out you A/C is working over time
Change that furnace filter every 4 weeks, not every 12
Your outside A/C unit is outside year round, 365 days a year
It gets rain, sleet and snow on it
It also gets grass clippings, leaves, and other debris blown up into it
Ideally have a HVAC person come out once a year to service it
They will disconnect the power to it and give it a true cleaning after removing a side panel
If you want to do it yourself you can shut the power off to your house, take a panel off, and then clean the inside debris
You can also wash the coils the products made for coil cleaning like Simple Green Foam Coil Cleaner
If you don’t want to shut the power off or take a panel off you can take a leaf blower ( keep it on LOW power, not full blast ) and try to blow out as much debris as possible
Then take your garden hose and spray from the top down…. Even doing just that can make tremendous differences in how your A/C runs in extreme heat
Your car::
Check the air in the tires, make sure they are all the same and at the proper PSI
Riding with 3 tires at 35PSI and 1 tire at 27PSI puts drag on the car, uses more gas, burns more oil, makes the whole system work harder
Check the radiator fluid… Not all radiator fluids are the same, make sure you get the right type for your vehicle ( Don’t listen to the kid working the counter on this one, Google your make, year and model )
Plus if you put the wrong type of fluid in it then can create “sludge” in the radiator
If the radiator fluid is “rusty” it’s time for a flush
Shops can usually do that for $150.00 .. That’s the cost for my big truck, fluid and labor, total, if you drive a “Hybrid” it may be more
If you want you can do it yourself, Google that too
IMPORTANT TO KNOW
“Back in the Day” Radiators were all metal, today many have plastic parts to include down at the petcock where you drain the fluid. If you break that you’ll then need to buy a new radiator….. So if you’re not super skilled, again they are cheap to go get flushed
Check the oil, “nuff said”
It’s hot out, they are saying that it’s suppose to ease up in a day or so, lets all hope so
Call / check in on your people, make sure everyone is okay
Bring those pets inside
Put some water outside for the birds
And go jump in the pool or the lake, I’m heading that way now….
